Blepharitis is a very common inflammatory disorder of the eyelids. Inflammation of the eyelid causes red and irritated eyelids. The etiology of this condition is not fully understood but it can be associated with bacterial colonization of the skin or associated with skin conditions such as rosacea. Blepharitis is subdivided into anterior and posterior blepharitis, but many patients suffer from both.
Anterior blepharitis – bacteria and/or Demodex mites that colonize the eyelid skin can lead to deposition of dandruff like flakes at the base of the eyelashes, which promotes inflammation of the eyelid.
Posterior blepharitis – abnormal oil production in the eyelid oil glands (Meibomian glands) can promote inflammation of the eyelid and lead to styes and dry eye.
