Refractive Lens Exchange

Refractive Lens Exchange

What is Refractive Lens Exchange (RLE)?

Patients in their mid-40s or older who desire vision correction surgery now have terrific options to permanently reduce their dependence on glasses. While LASIK has been a reliable form of vision correction for decades, LASIK will correct a patient to see in the distance without glasses. Beginning in our 40s, the lens that we use to focus on close objects begins to stiffen and we become dependent on reading glasses. Today, we have the ability to replace that naturally failing lens with a lens implant that will give you a range of vision (distance and reading). This procedure is identical to cataract surgery. However, RLE is performed before the patient develops cataracts with the goal of reducing a patient’s need for glasses.

What Are the Benefits of RLE?

RLE involves the replacement of the aging natural lens with an advanced technology artificial lens. The benefits of RLE include:

  • Improvement in refractive errors such as nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism
  • Reduced dependency on glasses/contacts
  • Ability to correct presbyopia: the natural loss of near vision with age
  • Avoid cataract developing in the future

Am I a Candidate for RLE?

RLE is usually recommended for patients who:

  • Are over 45 years of age
  • Have a stable prescription
  • Are in good health
  • Have no major eye health issues

How does RLE work?

The lens implant takes over the job of your weakening natural lens. RLE and cataract surgery are nearly identical (a cataract is simply when your natural lens inevitably becomes cloudy over time). If you undergo refractive lens exchange, you will not need to have cataract surgery later in your life. In addition, your vision will be more stable throughout the rest of your life compared to someone who has not undergone refractive lens exchange.

Refractive lens exchange has become the predominant and preferred vision correction surgery in patients over the age of 45 for many of the reasons listed above. Dr. Nightingale will evaluate you and determine whether this procedure is a possibility.

How is the RLE procedure?

RLE is a painless 5-10 minute procedure performed at one of our partner surgery centers. This procedure is performed one eye at a time, usually one week apart. On the day of the procedure, you will be administered a mild sedative and anesthetic drops will be placed on your eye. RLE is performed through tiny, no-stitch laser incisions.

How is RLE recovery?

Most patients experience a rapid recovery from RLE and can return to work and most activities in one day. Vision improvement is rapid, with most patients achieving excellent vision in the first 24-48 hours. RLE recovery is typically painless. Prescription eye drops are used for around 1 month after the procedure.
